2.0 tour de force: still learning, still playing, still 2.0

Continuing this grueling tour de force through Learn and Play I subscribed to a blog via bloglines. Web 2.0 is so hot right now...for the past 5 years...ugh. I must admit that after having this 2.0 business hyped and hyped and hyped not only at work but also in librarian school I'm a wee burnt out on the whole 2.0 phenom. But I digress in to whineyness--how unattractive. Pressing onward. Thing 8 (sigh): I subscribed to one of my favorite and very popular blogs by the pop culture librarian. Her blog is poppy and entertaining. She's way funny and though her blog is more about her life than her professional work in the library it's a great read.

Thing 8 blog completed. end transmission. signing off:

Subsrcibing to RSS feeds

So yeah...RSS is really useful because it saves you the time of checking 5 news websites multiple times a day. It simply tells you when something you find interesting comes up. CML is already using this technology on it's home page. They subscribe to the Dispatch headline RSS feed so the library home page is always updated with the most recent headlines. That means more accurate up to date information for our users and Dispatch readers which is good.

iTunes, iPod, and the Library

One of the more recent trends I've noticed in the library is the move to digital and downloadable formats. Nowadays people live in their own private audio universe and with the advent of the iPod libraries have been trying to make available downloadable formats for personal MP3 devices---but they've run into a few problems. CML uses Overdrive's service for downloadable materials; the problem is that the material on Overdrive is not compatible with iPod devices. This is a major problem as 80% of the MP3 market is control ed by iPod.

I believe it is possible to provide iPod support at the library and when I mention this idea to my friends they love it. The idea of coming into the library and putting the new Little Wayne (greatest Rapper alive) on my iPod FOR FREE in a matter of minutes is infinitely appealing. It is a service that can also fall within the legal rights of DRM covered music sold through iTunes (i did a bunch of research on this: under Apple's DRM a downloaded song can be placed on 5 computers and be put on an unlimited number of iPods-yay!)
I have a lot more on the specifics of this on my other blog that is yet to be posted but it's a great service and it is possible! I'm working on making this happen at CML at least in the teen areas with tactical project 1.5.3.

Flickr Third Party Inventions

I had some fun with this one! I LOVE KITSCH! So when I discovered an application that allowed you to spoof on those motivational posters I made one of my crazy redheaded home girl Liz's clairvoyant alter-ego. I pulled this picture of her off my MySpaces but you can really pull an image from anywhere like Flickr. You can do some really clever funny things with this application and I plan on using and playing with it more in the future!

Flickr Exploration: A Picture of My Favorite Snack

Whilst playing on Flickr I found a picture of my favorite afternoon snack: Samosas from The Indian Oven (or as I affectionately call it, "Indian Lovin')! The Indian Oven is really thee best Indian food in Columbus. Its right downtown, a few blocks away from Main library on Main st. You get 2 samosas with each order so you can share one with a cronie and then wash it down with a mango lassi--yum-yum! Also, don't be afraid of the baby puke green substance! It is a deliciously spicy chutney and it is you and your samosas friend! Apply librally!

This isn't my real blog

This isn't my real blog. I have another blog site project that I made for my E-Publishing class (also under the name "Your Sister in Library Struggle") that I haven't uploaded to the Kent State server yet but I plan to soon. I like it a little more than using sites like blogger because it gives more more control over the design of the page and I'm big on aesthetics like that. Doing the coding myself gives my webpage/blog a little more personality than just choosing one of the 6 blogger templates, which I like.
However, for the sake of Learn and Play I'll make a couple posts here and maybe replace this blog when I get my other one uploaded to the interweb. Yay lifelong learn'in.
